The Cambridge Primary School (CPS) Outdoor Education Program in Cambridge, New Zealand received a $10,000 donation from Brandt to fund an outdoor classroom space.
The outdoor class program takes place once a week on a student-created nature reserve located behind the school. The program gives students opportunities for hands-on learning about caring for the environment, native flora and fauna, hut building, and basic safety skills, while they also enjoy a variety of other physical activities.
“Brandt is dedicated to bettering the communities in which our employees live and work. We are proud to support this innovative program that enriches the lives of students, who will grow up to be engaged citizens,” says Phil Smith, Brandt VP of Operations—Upper North Island NZ.
CPS currently has 375 students and 55 teachers and staff. The key competencies and values they teach are adventuring and exploring, citizenship, communication, thinking, and self-identity. The outdoor classroom helps to develop experience and competencies in the outdoors through cooperation and problem-solving skills and challenges. The school employs a specialized teacher to deliver the program, which caters to different age groups.
“We are so grateful to Brandt for this generous donation. Sponsorships like this help us connect with our wider community. They also enable us to offer students a holistic curriculum and support them as diverse learners,” says Mike Pettit, Cambridge Primary School Principal.
The donation is part of the Brandt Thanks A Billion program, which just celebrated its twelfth anniversary. Since its inception, the program has invested more than $25 million in 250+ communities across Canada, the US, New Zealand, and Australia.
