Rolling Improves Soybean Performance.
In 2021, Brandt Agricultural Products teamed up with Precision Planting, LLC, a leading provider of precision ag technologies, to assess the yield and economic impact of rolling soybeans, using the Brandt Land Roller as the designated test equipment.
In year one of the multi-year study, the land roller was used in replicated strips at two different growth stages (V2 and V4) and the results were measured and compared to a control strip. The benefits of using a roller in soybeans include:
- Pushing dirt clods and rocks into the soil to avoid harvest issues – less damage to equipment
- Laying corn residue flat to aid in cleaner seed at harvest – higher crop quality
- Stimulating reproductive growth after rolling damage occurs – improved yield
Soybeans rolled at the V2 growth stage resulted in yield gains of +2.4Bu/A. and positive economic gains of +$28.75/A. However, rolling soybeans at V4 growth stage resulted in yield losses of -1.4Bu/A. and negative economic losses of -$16.77/A.
The long-term study will continue in subsequent years to finetune growth stage timing for maximum producer benefit.
